Dresser Drawers Redo

As I posted a few weeks ago, I have been looking for ways to
recycle, reuse, and redo.

I have come up with a way to do that with an old small dresser we had sitting in the attic. I had purchased this dresser for $10 from a garage sale a couple of years ago and we no longer were using it. So I thought I revamp it and make a bookcase for my living room. I took the photo in bad lighting...so the glare is in from my flash. Sorry about that. I started out with these dresser drawers. (I already have another plan for the dresser.)
I removed all the hardware and stacked the drawers on top of each other so dear hubby could get an idea of what I was wanting to do.
You get the idea?So I took the drawers outside and started putting on the base coat. A flat black.
I screwed the drawers together, added some paneling to the backside to help stabilize it, and put on the final coats of paint. Wallllaaa.....I have new bookcase. (Pay no mind to the accessories. Some of them are projects I'm working on.) I now have an extra piece of furniture and it was not cost to me. I used stuff I had on hand to make it.

Ideas from other Blogs

I like this simple idea of being able to display a few bible vereses that I love. I like the canvas...it makes it look more artistic and simple. This idea came from here.

I really love these floor candle sticks. I don't have anything beside my fireplace and I think these would look lovely. I found this idea on another blog. They were able to make these for $12 each. Not a bad price compared to PB's $149 price tag!

The Color Purple

My sister took me to The Orpheum in Memphis.
Let me tell it...it was wonderful.
I really enjoyed the show.
Thanks Big Sis.

I did get some things done around my house this weekend. I progressed a little bit on two of my projects. I hope to have one done tonight so I can take photos to show you. I cannot wait to share them with you!
What I'm listening to: Good Morning America on TV
Random Thoughts: Will anyone notice if I don't get anything done today?

Cool Vintage Looking Letters

I was in the store Earth Trader a couple of weeks ago and they had these letters that I just loved. Below is a picture of what they sorta looked like. Except in the store, they were just single letters and they sold for $5 each. Now I could have paid $20 but I am trying to stick to my budget and I thought I could make them on my own. So here is what I did....

I got my supplies together:

Mod Podge

Paint Brush

Cut Magazine Strips

Stain

Scrap Panel Boards

I cut HEEB out of my scrap panel board using my jig saw. Then, using my mod podge,I applied my magazine strips to all of my letters and let it dry.
After about 24 hours, it was good and dry. So I used my a sharp razor blade and cut off the excess magazine strips. I applied a thin coat of stain onto of the letters. The white didn't look so white and the letters had more of vintage look. I then applied 3 coats of mod podge on top waiting for each coat to dry.

Here is my finished project. I like it and that is all that matters.

A friend of mine had the idea of using newspapers. I like that idea too.

I feel another project coming on...

As I searched the web today and I have been inspired to do another project (while I am in the middle of another project). So I started with this....
Hopefully by next week I can show you what I have made.
Here is a Sneek Peek.

Old New Canisters

I found these great canisters for FREE. I love free things.
With a little paint, love, and time...I will have something new in my kitchen.
I keep forgetting to take "before" photos. By the time I remembered I already spray painted the wooden lids black. You might not be able to tell by the picture but these are really orange. Straight from early 1970's.
Here is my finished project. With some off white & black spray paint, card stock, and mod podge...I have new canisters.

Once I have it all done in my kitchen I will take pictures of how I displayed it all. It is coming together nicely.

Remaking of our Knife Holder

I recieved this butcher block type knife holder 13 years ago as a wedding present. I thought it could use a little color in our new RED kitchen.
So the kids and I started by roughing it up a bit.

She was my little helper and did a great job.

This is our finished project. We painted it black and then added a clear coat.
I used some Mod Podge and added the word knife to the front.
I added some stain over the letters so they looked like wood and blended in.
I love how it all turned out.

Kitchen Decor Ideas

As I was looking on the net for inexpensive decorating idea I saved a few of the projects I like.
Here are some of them.
Enjoy!
A Ruler Coat Rack. I like the vintage look.
These are too cute and I might do them in my kitchen
You can try making these hooks yourself too.

I have been "collecting" jars lately. I have spray painted some of the lids but I like this idea too.

I think this is cute idea for old cupcake pans.
You could paint it any color and then even change out the
papers for the season.

Once I have found a cool wooden frame, I will have one of these in my kitchen. I like how it is not just a plain old frame. It has some character. Besides, who doesn't like having a chalk board in their kitchen?

The DORMEYER SILVER CHEF 4300

It is composed of chromed & stainless steel, polished aluminum, and black & red Bakelite. The mixer is rust & dent-free, works great, and sounds like a Machine Age mixer should! It could use some polishing though.

It even comes with a meat grinder and all the needed accessories. However, I'm not sure I will ever need the meat grinder but it is still pretty cool.

I found all this in my grandma's basement. What a great find! My grandma told me that it had belonged to my great-grandmother and that when she passed away, my grandma kept it because she like it so much. My grandma never used it though. She never switched out her kitchen mixer for my great-grandmother's. So, not only is this a cool functioning machine but it once belonged to my great-grandmother. A little family history is now sitting right in my kitchen.

Happy Birthday

Two people in my family have birthdays today!!
My mom....this is her back in the day.
In case my didn't notice my dad's sideburns...those things are a dead give away.
It is David's birthday too.
He really is the love of my life.

The Compound

Eli's father built the Compound to keep them safe.

Now, they can't get out.

He won't let them.

That is printed right on the cover of the book.

This book was recommended to me by my daughter.

She reads often.

It was a fast simple read.

I enjoyed the book.

Maybe you will too.

Scottie Pippen picks some guy to give his induction speech

Scottie Pippen is being inducted into the hall of fame and he picks Jordan to give the introduction speech.

Seriously, guys, Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan sharing a stage. They're great. That's great. Great.
Read this article. Pretty Cool.

My Dinning Room is done

Here is the before.....

Here is it completed. I painted the walls blue and hung up my curtains.
We moved the table into the dining room and added the leaf.

I put an antique dresser in the corner to use as in place of a hutch.

The dining room is done. I don't have anything on the table or the walls but that will come eventually. I am fixing my house up on a budget and those things are not something I want to go out and buy right now. Instead, I am trying to just use what I already own or use what has been given to me. I do love how the room has turned out. It feels nice to have another room completely finished in my house.

SIMPLE LIVING

There is something to be be said for simple living. Less bills, less stuff, less chaos...there is something to all that. At my house we are getting our household in order so to speak. We are starting a budget. We are doing this so we can enjoy life more. The idea is to be able to save money so if we want to take a family vacation, we don't have to go in debt to do so. When our daughter turns 16 and wants to buy a car, we can help her. When our kids go to college, we can have some funds to help them. We have to ask ourselves....do we want this junk (because that is what stuff is most of the time) or are we going to look at the bigger picture?

So, as we are getting things in order at my house, I am looking for ways to reduce, recycle and reuse. I am wanting to create simple and organized life. I am doing that room by room and month by month. All this will not happen overnight but it is happening and I am smiling about it.
